VACUUM TECHNIQUE FOR RESTORATION
3. TRANSPARENT LINING OF A PAINTING ON CANVAS BY VINCENZO MILIONE, 1781.
The painting (71 x 105 cm) is from the Archicoenobium of the Camaldoli Monastery, Poppi (Arezzo). The reverse of the canvas bears an inscription in black pigment: Dipinse Vincenzo Milione Pittore al Sudario in Roma 1781.

The lining was performed under vacuum with transparent synthetic adhesive Beva film. The adhesive joined the support canvas, which presented cuts and deformations, to the new perfectly transparent synthetic canvas.
The result, obtained thanks to our innovative apparatus (which replaces the hot table), was very positive since planarity of the support was combined with perfect transparency of the painting’s reverse. The lined painting was mounted on the new expandable stretcher that replaced the unsuitable and unrestorable original one.
